Juggling Events

Monday morning of graduation week started with a long to-do list, that we checked off as quickly as we could. Cakes were ordered, graduation display board was completed, photo DVD done, work began on speech and slide show with music, fires were put out as they happened, plans were made for airport travel to pick up family coming for event and all the details worked out as it came together. The Graduate and I splurged and had a quiet breakfast out together followed by a manicure (her) and a pedicure (me) on Tuesday morning. The breakfast was at one of our favorite places, family owned and operated, and we shared a western omelet and strawberry blintzes. YUM.
Tuesday was filled with band dress rehearsal in the afternoon, complicated transportation issues due to that, my work, PALOA (PA Light Opera Associatrion-The Graduate is in the Pirates of Penzance) practice, and airport pick ups. All worked out, I headed to the airport after dinner, stopping for some shopping, after the ferry across the sound. Working my way south, I arrived and picked up my mom and sister around 1030 as they arrived from Atlanta.  Wore out and weary from their long travel day, we still had over two hours to travel to my home. Everyone was asleep when we arrived at nearly 2 AM. Once they were safely ensconced in the master suite, we all slept in the next morning, enjoying Pioneer Woman's French Toast Breakfast Casserole on arising.
Wednesday was scheduled to be a busy day although our company relaxed at home, recovering from jet lag and fatigue from traveling all the way across the country for our event. Bob and I traveled south for a doctor's appt. for him and The Graduate saw that her sister made it to class at Summit for an end of year party. After dinner of leftover Mexican from Sunday, I left with both girls, one headed for the summer band concert warm up and the other with me for the Scholarship Award Banquet. This evening was a juggle of events and timing. Back in January, The Graduate and I committed to make a scholarship notebook for the local high school and community at large. We also committed to attend this award event with no conflict in site. Later without my notice, of which I am guilty, the band concert date was changed and coincided with the award night. Our Graduate, being the lead drummer, could not possibly be in two places at once, but she was required to be at both events. After juggling the concert playing order, and asking to be awarded early in the evening at the high school (actually to no avail), the early start time of 6 and the late start time of the concert of 730, worked to our advantage. It meant I missed Farmer Girl's playing in Beginning Jazz as well as Intermediate Concert Band, but I was there for the $1000 Scholarship Award to The Graduate at around 730. The close proximity of this event to the concert allowed us to leave and still arrive at the concert in time for a DVD showing of our trip to DC. It also allowed The Graduate to change clothes and prepare for the performance for Advanced Jazz and Advanced Band. Whew, what a whirlwind evening of juggling!

That's her in the pink. She was not the only one who received an award from the Masons!

A closer up of the award recipients. Glad she wore pink!

The entire group. Almost half a million dollars was awarded to students in community scholarships.
The concert was great and it was so nice to sit back and enjoy it once the juggling ended. The DVD had some lighthearted moments and surprises (you never know when someone might be taking your picture) and it was fun to reminisce and relive the trip.
Our soloist playing "I Got Rhythm"
Jazz band did an amazing job playing songs like the above as well as trying some Latin tunes. Summer Pops concert always includes movie title songs. They played The Incredibles, The Chronicles of Narnia, Phantom of the Opera, and How to Train Your Dragon. It's always fun to end the year with some challenging, but easily recognizable songs. It was also neat that FINALLY some of our family were there and able to enjoy what a homeschooling band could do!
Never able to get a good shot of the Graduate, I snuck backstage and caught this one.
After an amazingly busy day, we enjoyed some fellowship with cookies and coffee before heading home. Next up: Graduation Day!
