On Top of Our World

The north view. If you look closely, you can see the "spit"
In over a decade of living here, we have never taken this perilous drive to the top of the mountains near our home.
One evening last month, we set out, traveling up and around narrow, steep, can't see around the next curve, one lane how do I pass this fellow coming down the mountain going way faster than I feel comfortable with and not plunge over the shale strewn edge? over 16 mile drive to the top. Apparently, this was supposed to be the location of the national park and it's visitor center. However, this road is located between two cities and the city to the west, fought a long and hard battle to have the entrance be located right in the middle of their downtown so the tourists would have to traverse through there on their way. I guess it makes sense economically for them and allows us an amazing park entrance and view there and, also the untamed, solitude of this area too.
The view to the east.
Our home is on that dark green peninsula above the mass of land.

And to the west.

Griffin was even able to go on this trip although he wasn't allowed on the short hike that we opted not to take.

Our picnic spot.

The light was perfect for pictures and, for a change, some were taken of me!

This one is a good shot of us, but our eyes, especially mine, are almost closed!
The view on the way down (which was much less scary than up!)
We didn't stay very long, not wanting to make the drive in the dark. It was a lovely evening though and next time we go back, we want to camp!
