America the Beautiful

I don't really know how to find pretty clip art pictures to add to my blog, but wanted to share the words to America the Beautiful with you. We sang it at the end of our church service yesterday. After the pastor pointed out how it wasn't only a song for our country but actually a prayer to God as well, I could barely get past the words in the first two lines. How many Americans even know the words? How many even listen to what the words are saying and realize how very fortunate we are to live in America the Beautiful? How many have even heard the other verses and REALLY listened to them? So, here they are, every beautiful and meaningful word that Katherine Bates wrote after seeing the Rocky Mountains. Enjoy and be blessed.

May God bless America and May America bless God.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
