Over the course of our home building, we were able to pay off our van making us debt free except for the mortgage (and our intention is to pay that off early too!) Following the Dave Ramsey plan, we are on a budget and trying to stick with it. We also will probably never buy a brand spanking new car again due to the fact of their rapid depreciation and the cost being so staggeringly high, that paying cash for one is probably not possible. AND we do NOT want to finance a car and be in debt with a car payment every month ever again. I hate that Chase used as their slogan "CHASE Freedom"as we believe that freedom is not found in having credit card debt!
Anyway, having said that and after paying off the van, we began setting aside money for a new used car for Bob. His trusty Subaru has over 300,000 miles on it, so we wanted to make sure he had something more reliable for work. (it has now passed down to The Scribbler for her use primarily AFTER a safety inspection and some work). Bob began looking in the paper and on Craigslist for another Subaru, but began expanding his search considering Hyundai, Toyota or other Hondas. He stopped at some used car lots, but was not impressed with the quality in what was being offered. One day, he stopped at a European Auto Dealer and talked with a man there. Here is his sweet deal......... .
....a 1988 BMW with only 108,000 miles on it and selling for even less than our saved amount! It had only one primary owner who ordered directly from the factory in Germany. It is in mint condition, has all the paperwork with it, and rides beautifully. We NEVER thought we would own a Beemer! It's original cost was around $46,000. It's a shame to use as a "work" car but I need the van for carpooling and for hauling our dear Griffin around. (he is NOT allowed in the Beemer). I would much rather drive this one and we often fight over who gets it for an event. More often than not, it leaves each and every morning to drive our dear husband and dad off to work in a safe.......and a sweet ride.
Hmmm... TWO friends with a BMW this year; we must be moving up in the world! Do they make BMW's that seat 7? Maybe I wouldn't want to know the price.... Maybe I like my paid-for van, boring as it is to my teenage girls.
