Annie's Party

Each of the last three years, the girls have waited with eager anticipation for the birthday party of a fellow homeschooler, band member, and debate team member. She has quite elaborate parties that have become something of a celebrated infamous local event. Usually, they are held at the local grange and feature a mystery theme of some sort. One year, they had to dress as a favorite detective. The Scribbler went as Mrs Peacock from the Clue game. Other girls dressed as 99 from Get Smart, Mrs Marple and others. The guys came as Max from Get Smart, Sherlock Holmes, the Scooby Doo guy and even Monk. (he was a treat to dance with as he maintained his persona and acted the same as Monk with his obsessive/compulsive behavior). Last year, the theme was Fiesta. This year, being her 21st, it was Hollywood Opening Night and dress was "your most formal attire". Her dress, above, was made by her mom.
The evening begins with dance lessons. Her brothers are all wonderful dancers and her eldest one loves to teach and demonstrate dances like the Foxtrot, the Cha Cha, the Simba, the Waltz, and the Swing including East Coast and West Coast. The girls will typically line up on one side of the room with boys on the other. It is always so much fun to see them all dressed up in their finery. The girls will prepare for weeks in advance, searching for the perfect dress, hair, jewelry. Everyone's hair is so perfectly coifed and curled. Here are a group of girls showing off their attire and hair. Aren't they lovely? The funny thing is that as compliments fly amid questions about where they found their dresses, the most common answer is Goodwill or other local thrift stores. I love all these girls and their willingness to be content shopping at Goodwill and finding such great deals. They show such character in not getting caught up in the name brands and in being able to be thrifty and good stewards of God's blessings. The Scribbler found her dress at Goodwill and her shrug at Ross. Other girls also made their dresses or borrowed them for the nights event. The boys were able to wear their band formals too. Farmer Girl felt sorry for them since they didn't get to go out and look for beautiful dresses!
The Scribbler is shown below learning the Cha Cha from one of Annie's brothers. Once, the lessons are over, the dancing and games begin. In the past, it has been a mystery so you are trying to get clues about who murdered who etc. This year, being a Hollywood theme, it was all about movie trivia. To encourage everyone to dance and to not dance with the same girl (or boy) all the time, everyone has a dance card and every time you dance with a different someone, you get a clue or in this case, a movie trivia question. You submit your answers and they were compiled for prizes. There are prizes given for most answered correctly as well as for the boy who danced with the most girls and the girl who danced with the most boys. Farmer Girl is shown here dancing with one of her dance partners. She was so excited to go this year as you have to be 13 to attend so it was her first time to attend officially. She has been able to go and watch but that is not quite the same! She had a great time, but her dancing feet were tired and achy after 6 hours of dancing! Her dress only cost us $1.29!!! Her shrug a bit more but still the entire outfit for less than $20. The shrug necessary due to the immodesty of the dress and its straps or should I say lack of straps? All right, she reminded me that she had straps just not ones that were wide enough! Another thing I appreciate about my girls and their many friends is their modesty and respect for themselves, others and God in the way they dress and behave. And, the boys are such gentlemen!
They were also not afraid to look silly! This little fellow was asked by his dad, "do you want to dance?" He said, yes, but with a girl (not his dad!). This "girl" over heard him and asked him to dance.
Farmer Girl with friends, taking a break between dances and resting her achy feet!
It was a wonderful evening, but when midnight rolled around, my girls were exhausted and ready to go home. Below are some "right before bed" shots at the doorway. I had forgotten to get pictures of them BEFORE the dance. They still looked nice, but their hair had fallen some.

And, here they are feigning exhaustion...they were still excited from all the fun. It was nearly 130 by the time they were in bed!
Happy 21st birthday, Annie! Thanks for the memories of a wonderful party.
