Our Scribbler received word this weekend that she was accepted into the only college she has applied to as yet! It is a private Christian College in a state adjoining ours, about 5 hours away. I am not really sure why we applied...for a number of reasons, she is probably NOT going next year to college. Unless the Lord opens up many doors for her and shows us that this is His will for her, we are taking a "Gap" year after graduation. A gap year will allow her time to pray and think about what she wants to do. It seems rather foolish to send children off to college unless they have some inkling of their life's direction. It costs way too much money for her to go there to socialize or "find herself". I realize that this might not be the most popular choice especially amongst high schoolers who look to college automatically or want to go there to have fun. It will also allow her time to earn some money for college. We are not prepared to pay for this college and will not go into debt for college or strap her (and a husband) with debt when she graduates. This college is, like many others, VERY expensive. Fortunately, academically, she will get some scholarship for her GPA and SAT scores as well as her AWANA Citation Award. We will explore other avenues for assistance as well. In the meantime, she will use this break to work and study, possibly taking some more CLEP exams or on line courses or even classes at the community college. She may take a mission trip again, She may do some traveling. She will also be able to pursue some of her "passions" that she doesn't always have time for during school. She desperately wants to learn more about graphics and animation as well as be able to hone her artistic and writing ability. I would like to see her working with her dad on stained glass projects or other artistic endeavors. She will also be helping me in the home, learning to run a household, do the budget, cook for her family to come, and be hospitable. I am really looking forward to this time with her together at home with us, learning to be a Proverbs 31 woman. She will also have more time to be in God's word, pursuing His heart for her life. Perhaps this is the most important reason for the gap year.
In the meantime, we are glad she got accepted. It is nice confirmation that homeschooling was the right thing for her and for us and that homeschoolers do get accepted into college even without an accredited diploma. That diplomas are really only pieces of paper, the proof is in the pudding :)
Congratulations, Scribbler. We love you and the lovely young lady you are becoming! We are VERY proud of you and your accomplishments too.
Thanks for listening, Ellie~
