4H Classic

Farmer Girl recently had the opportunity to show off her chickens and her knowledge about them at the local 4H classic, an event to prepare for county fair. She chose to take her Buff Orpington, one of the most friendly of her brood and thus the most easy to handle. The required clothing was black pants, white long sleeved shirt as well as black shoes and hair pulled back. They all looked quite professional. She competed in the intermediate class. All of the other participants have been in 4H before and had a bit more knowledge of chickens and the entire process. It was a grueling session with the judge for Fit and Show, lasting well over 30 minutes. I asked her leader if this is what we could expect at fair and she said it was lasting so long because she was having a hard time deciding the ribbons! They were asked about parts, breed, class, molting, laying, and even as time wore on, the incubation period for canary eggs! She was getting desperate trying to place them. She even had them pass their chicks to the person on their left and asked them questions about their neighbors chicken! Finally, ribbons were awarded. It was a great experience for her and will better prepare her for the upcoming county fair in Auagust. She did great, especially in the handling and showing of her Buff, but she still has quite a bit of studying to do.
