Continuing Chicken Saga

The Chef and Farmer Girl began work on the fenced in chicken yard this weekend. As much as our chickens like their coop and are beginning to roost inside, it is time to get them outside! Our ground as you may know from previous posts is either very soupy or like cement when it is dry. We have had lovely weather over the last two weeks so you can imagine the ground was very hard. We/they worked all day on this project and some on Sunday. Farmer Girl helped dig a hole and a half, but The Chef did the other 6 or so. He was very sore and weary, wishing this coop would be done! We are one step closer as they finished it up this evening. Farmer Girl went inside the coop as he finished up the little side door. Once done, she encouraged and shooed them out one by one. Some were very reluctant to go out. It was so funny to watch her arm coming out to give a gentle push again and again to them. Mostly because that is the ONLY part of her we could see! Once out, they stayed mostly in this corner picking at the dirt. I am sure they will get more adventuresome as they get used to it. It really felt like a farm when they were actually outside, especially with the goats bleating in the background, begging for attention too. See how big the chickens are? And, it's official, we have four roosters. They are SO pretty. It will be difficult to get rid of them as they are so regal and lovely. We are hoping to find homes and not dinner tables for them :) Next project will be to finish up the nesting boxes so they can use them for laying in a couple of months.
